There are three separate downloadable resources available which are:

Rugby Teacher Resource
Rugby PowerPoint Resource
Rugby Student Resource

All resources compliment each other and for best use we suggest you use all resources in conjunction with each other during delivery of the module to your class/audience.

Rugby Teacher Resource

The teacher resource for rugby is a document with facts, key points and slide descriptions, which can be used as a basis of a script, created to aid the delivery of the rugby – performance strips, materials and their properties resource. The teacher resource is best delivered in conjunction with the PowerPoint resource (presentation), also downloadable from the site. A downloadable student resource worksheet supplements the module and can be used as a student handout. The resources are suitable for use to aid chemistry teaching for 11 -14 year olds and introduce the subject of materials, both synthetic and naturally occurring used in the manufacture of clothing and equipment in the sport of rugby. Particular emphasis is first placed on the properties of materials and certain fabrics before cotton, Lycra® and Thinsulate® are explored in more detail.

Rugby PowerPoint Resource

The PowerPoint resource for rugby is a presentation designed for teachers to use as a visual tool when using the teacher resource. The presentation looks briefly at the sport of rugby and then looks more closely at some of the materials, both synthetic and naturally occurring, that are used to produce some of the cloths and equipment found in the sport of rugby. The presentation is visual with pictures as well as bulleted key points and notes. The student resource questions have been added to the presentation along with the answers to allow the answering of the questions to take place in a group situation or to be used for group revision purposes.

Rugby Student Resource

The student resource for rugby is a single page document consisting of questions, pictures and information covering the subject of materials and their properties, mainly covering fabrics. The sheet is designed to be used at the end of the module to help students recap on the material covered and aid teachers to check that learning has taken place. The questions can be used during delivery of the PowerPoint presentation if preferred or as a plenary or homework exercise.

About Rugby
According to legend the sport was invented at Rugby School in England using altered football rules.  A match lasts for 80 minutes and involves two teams of 15 players aiming to out score each other.  Various points are awarded for a try, drop goal, penalty try, place kick following a penalty and conversion.
The game is played with a prolate spheroid ball and the aim of the attacking team (the ball carrying team) is to move the ball towards the oppositions goal area to score a try.  Players can run with the ball but can only pass it backwards or laterally, however it can be kicked in any direction.
The defending teams aim is to halt the attackers progress, which can be done by physically tackling the ball carrier or intercepting a pass.
