| About Golf |
The aim of golf is to get the ball into the designated hole in as few strokes as possible. Dependant on the shot required a wood, iron or putter (the different types of clubs available) is used to hit the motionless ball towards the hole. A golf course usually consists of 18 holes and a person’s score is the number of strokes it takes to complete the course, the person with the lowest score being the winner. Each course has a ‘par’; this refers to how many strokes an expert golfer would need to complete the course. Usual par for an 18 hole course is 72. Each hole has a teeing off area where the player starts, a fairway with rough long grass at the sides and a green where the hole is located. Some holes have hazards that players need to navigate over or around included to make the course harder and more interesting, these can include bunkers, trees, water hazards and bends and undulations in the fairways and greens. It is documented that the game of golf originates from Scotland, and the St Andrews links is referred to as the ‘home of golf’. Scotland still has a higher ratio of golf courses per person than any other country in the world.
