| About Skiing |
Skiing involves gliding over snow using skis. These are long thin ‘planks’, which were initially made from wood, but are now usually made from fibreglass or related composites. The skis are attached to the person’s feet with the use of ski bindings. Originally skiing was used as a form of transport but has evolved into a popular recreational activity with numerous events being held throughout the winter months, climaxing in the Winter Olympics held every four years. There are various different events held under the banner of skiing including alpine skiing, cross country races, freestyle including moguls, Nordic competitions and the notorious ski jump.
However, skiing is not the only sport competed at on snow. A more recent invention to travel on snow is by using a snowboard, where participants have both feet strapped to a single board. As for skiing various competitions are held through out the year and snowboarding events were added to the Winter Olympic itinerary in 1998. Other sports which you will find at both the Winter Olympics and various international competitions held throughout the year which take place on snow and ice include Bobsleigh, Luge, Biathlon, Curling, Ice Hockey and Skating.
